 Rute C. Sofia

Associate Professor at Universidade Lusófona | Senior Researcher at COPELABS | NEMPS Director 2018/2019

Rute C. Sofia (PhD 2004) research background has been developed on industrial and on academic context, and she has co-founded COPELABS (2012), research unit which she steered between 2013-2017. She has co-founded Senception Lda (2013), a startup focused on personal communication platforms.
Rute holds over 50 peer-reviewed publications in her fields of expertise, and 9 patents. She is an ACM member and an IEEE Senior Member. She was (07-10) a Senior Researcher and area leader at INESC Porto (IAN, UTM) and a Senior Researcher (07) at Nokia Siemens Networks GmbH. She was a Research Scientist at Siemens AG Corporate Technology (04-07) and a Senior Researcher at the Bundeswehr University, Munich. Her current research interests are: network architectures and protocols; IoT; mobility management and estimation; network mining.

Paulo M. Mendes

Associate Professor at Universidade Lusófona | COPELABS Senior Researcher

Paulo Mendes (PhD 2004) has a research background in industry and acaedemia. He was one of COPELABS co-founders (2012), and co-founded Senception Lda (2013). He was the NEMPS Director and one of his founders (2012-2018). Paulo Mendes has more than 80 articles in journals, magazines, books and conference proceedings and his inventions have been protected by 14 international patents.   

He was  a Senior Researcher (2003-2007) at NTT DoCoMo Euro-Labs, Munich, Germany, and the co-coordinator of the “Internet Architectures and Networking” area of UTM, INESC Porto (2007-2010).

His research interests relate to cooperative wireless systems, self-organizing networks, and complex networks.

João Canto

Assistant Professor at Universidade Lusófona | COPELABS Senior Researcher

João Canto holds a BEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering by IST, UTL, Lisboa (2004); MSc 2006 and a PhD in 2011, both in Electrical and Computer Engineering by IST, UTL, Lisboa.

He is a member of the IEEE since 2005 and of the Ordem dos Engenheiros since 2011. He has published 5 papers in international scientific journals with peer review and 22 papers in international conference proceedings. Has also been a member of the organizing committee of the Iberian conference: "Encuentro Iberico de Electromagnetismo Computacional - EIEC"(2011), and is an occasional referee of the International Journal: "Progress in Electromagnetic Research - PIER".

Célia Quico

Célia Quico has a PhD in Communication Sciences by Universidade Nova de Lisboa. She is the coordinator of the R&D project "iDTV-HEALTH: Inclusive services to promote health and wellness via digital interactive television". Previously, Célia coordinated the research project "ADOPT-DTV: Barriers to digital television adoption in the context of the digital switchover".

Her main research interests are media audiences, adoption of innovations, interactive television, media convergence, cross-media/ transmedia, accessibility and universal design.

Conceição Costa

Conceição Costa is a PhD in Communication Sciences - Media Studies from FCSHUniversidade Nova de Lisboa. She holds a Master of Arts in Business Communication and Public Relations from the European University and she is a certified usability analyst from Human Factors International (USA). Currently she is an Assistant Professor and Researcher at the School of Communication Studies, Art and Information Technologies (ECATI) of Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias (UHLT) in Lisbon, Portugal. She is a lecturer at several Bachelor degrees, Master degrees and the Doctoral degree in Communication Sciences at ECATI.

José Quintino Rogado

José Rogado is the Director of the Computer Engineering and Information Systems Department. His teaching domains include Operating Systems, Computer Networks, Identity Management and Parallel Computing. José Q. Rogado graduated at the Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon) in Electronic Engineering, holds a "Doctorat d'Université" in Information Systems by Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI) and a Ph.D.in Computer Engineering by Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (UTL) He has spent 4 years as an Invited Researcher at the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique en Automatique (INRIA - France) where he worked in several projects in the area of Operating Systems development and performance optimization. He then spent 7 years as an Engineering Researcher with the Open Software Research Institute.

Francesco Costigliola

Francesco Costigliola holds a master in Statistics and Information Management from Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a Ph.D.  in Statistics by the University of Naples (2017). He is a Senior Data Scientist in the Analytics area with over 10 years of professional experience and exposure to data and advanced analytics. Broad experience in public speaking, consulting and classroom teaching.He has worked as a Senior Data Scientist with EDP Inovação and is currently working in Fidelidade. His interests concern: data mining, neural networks.

Pedro Sá Costa

Pedro Costa is an Assistant Professor at Universidade Lusófona (Lisbon), where he lectures courses from the Informatics Department. His teaching domains include Fundamentals of Programming, Cloud and Big data solutions, Distributed Systems, Computer Networks, and dependability. Pedro  graduated at Faculdade de Ciências of Universidade de Lisboa (Lisbon) in Informatics, holds a Ph.D. in Informatics at the same University. He has spent 6 years as a Junior Researcher at LaSIGE (Lisbon) where he worked in several projects in the area of Cloud computing and fault tolerance. He was several years of experience at private companies such as Siemens and Nokia where he participated and in projects related to IPTV, Mobile TV, OSS/BSS, and still participates in Big Data project to process telecom data. His current interests are Distributed Systems, Dependability, Security, Cloud Computing, and Big Data.

Pedro Alves

Pedro Alves (PhD 2014, MSc 1999 by Instituto Superior Técnico) is the Director of the Bsc in Computer Sciences of Universidade Lusófona. He was a Solutions Architect at Opensoft (2002-2016) and mentor at Vodafone Labs (2014-2015). In parallel with his consultancy activity, he lectures at Universidade Lusófona since 2014. During his professional activity, he was responsible for the architecture and implementation of high impact projects in Portugal, such as Portal das Finanças, tax submission through Internet and Portal da Habitação. He participated in an acceleration program for startups in Silicon Valley and advised several startups at Vodafone Labs. As a professor, he is responsible for several Programming disciplines and Mobile Computing in the Computer Science Bsc.

Ricardo de Oliveira

Ricardo de Oliveira (PhD 2008, M.Sc. 1999, UTL, Aerospacial Engineering), has been working in aeronautic industry as well as in IT since 2000. He is currently an associate professor at ULHT and a COPELABS researcher. His interests are in pattern recognition.
